Divorce might have to happen, but many times it is preventable.

Fortunately for many of my clients over the past 40 years, many marriages with a history deeper love and good times have been saved. Other marriages were filled with so much selfishness that divorce was the outcome.

Those that have been saved after the towels were thrown in through separations and filed divorce action were marriages where communication broke down because of basic differences and/or where the challenge to really "be there" for one another had never been pointed out. I have enjoyed helping those who really did love one another but just could not live together without disappointing and hurting one another. If this is your situation, perhaps I can help.

Why not see if there is a chance of saving your marriage rather than spend thousands of dollars on legal fees and then marry someone else and make the same mistakes?  Since second marriages are more vulnerable to divorce than first marriages, perhaps its smart to spend, say, a thousand dollars, rather than $5,000 to $50,000 on legal fees.

WHAT WE CAN DO TO SEE IF THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE OF AVOIDING DIVORCE:

First:  Usually, with the two of you separate from one another, we will discuss your marriage disatisfaction and identify problems that would have to be solved to create an enjoyable and meaningful relationship. First, you each get to me a 2-page email or written description of what you are unhappy about in the marriage. (This step is to save a little money and can be waived for face-to-face explanation.) Then, I meet with each of you separately to explore more deeply what has been going on in your marriage and family.

In the case that there is not much hostility, you can choose to meet with me together right from the start.

Second:  You will take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator which is a personality inventory, the results of which are totally under your control (unlike other helpful tests like the inkblot test).

Then, separately or together, I will teach you how to understand yourself and your spouse and how to be helpful to each other using your personality differences. The MBTI usually explains over 60% of difficulties between the two of you.

Third:  We will look at each of your backgrounds to identify past troublesome experiences that might make your marriage very difficult. I will show you how to battle those influences by working together to help one another.

Fourth:  I will teach many basic skills needed to resolve problems and build a great marriage.

Fifth:  We will focus on solving problems.

Sixth:  If you are successful, you can spend your thousands of dollars on something other than divorce lawyers.

But, if this does not work, you will know that you gave saving your marriage an exceptional try. Hopefully, some progress will have been made to significantly reduce the legal fees of a divorce. This savings will likely more than pay for this attempt to save the marriage and still save you money overall.
